Tom Fan, lives in China

I have read the book since i was a child, it bring me profound joy. And I love the related TV series in Chinese version.

Robert Free, lived in ChinaA great explanation of the limitations of the mind. The book is great and a fun read and the Japanese TV series is even more fun.

Richard Seeto, because of my interest in its history and the way it has been exploited & rubbis

I have not read the book but I have seen the Japanese produced TV series and it is a great movie adventure enjoyed by most Westerners especially their children.

However, as far as Western people are concerned, it is just a surface interest and deep interest involve deep study of the classic.

Banson Chong, Passionate about Dr Suns "Three Principals for the People".

"Journey to the West" is ranked one of the top 4 classical works in the Chinese literary world, but definitely not well known amongst the general Western readership - save and excepting those who are familiar with Chinese classics.

I think many Westerners know it exists (or at least they have heard of Monkey King/Sun Wukong as a character) and a lot of them have seen some of the adaptations (the Chinese TV series from 1986 used to be very popular in my country). But I'm pretty sure only a few have actually read it.

That being said, Westerners are more likely to enjoy Journey to the West than any other of the 4 great classics. Even if you know next to nothing about Chinese history, mythology and culture, you can still enjoy the book as a fantastic adventure. It's got monsters, demons, immortals and magic; furthermore, narratives about great journeys (physical as well as spiritual) have had a long tradition in the West.

Not to mention the Monkey is a bit of a trickster with a rather profound individualistic streak and we tend to like that.

(I guess Water Margin might also be quite accessible to general Western readership, though most people I know would probably have a bit of a problem with all the names. ;-)

But Dream of the Red Chamber and Romance of the Three Kingdoms might be a bit daunting for an average Westerner to read through.)

Ian Mote, I have lived in Shanghai 7 years & have been to every Chinese province

Westerners coming to China will know it as it is a very popular story here that is still regularly made into new films & TV.

I actually read it, at 1800 pages took some time but I made it in the end. It is pretty easy to read & there are regular episodic stories as they meet other creatures & challenges along their way

Tha said, most people in the UK wouldn't have heard of it, unless as others mentioned here they are of a certain age that they watched the Japanese-made Kung fu-heavy version on 80s kids' TV. And we all remember the funky theme tune!

Westerners mainly know it as Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball came to America a bit later than South America (and some European countries I think) and was very well received as American weren’t used to such intense action and adventurous world building in cartoon/comic form.

The Japanese "Journey to the West" TV show also played in various European countries before Dragon Ball.

Jimmy Y. Zhong, Knows about Chinese history like the back of my palm

An average Westerner/Caucasian/White person would not think of “Journey to the West” because he/she has not been taught about this in school and probably will NEVER think about it unless he/she traveled to China and East Asia. Ordinary westerners think lowly of Chinese and Asians in generally, so don’t expect them to know anything specific or fancy about your history, language, and/or culture. Western sinologists and Chinese studies scholars are excluded, of course.
